The Betrayal - John 18:1-11
SETTING THE SCENE
• What – Identification of Jesus by Judas
• Where – Garden of Gethsemane –vv. 1-2
• Why – Initiation of Trial & Death of Jesus
• How – Kiss of Identification
• Who – Roman Soldiers, Chief Priests, Pharisees, Disciples
• The Betrayal - John 18:1-11
THE CHIEF PRIESTS AND PHARISEES
• Tribe of Levi
• Chief Priests were rulers over families of priests, second only to High Priest
• Pharisees were interpreters of the Law - Matt. 23 and John 12:42-43
THE ROMAN SOLDIERS
• Mercenaries – Violent and brutal
• Great Multitude, Detachment – 200-600
• Lanterns, torches and weapons – vs. 3
• A Noisy Lot! (But Jesus knew – vs.4)
• Fell back when Jesus said “I Am”– vv.5- 7
THE DISCIPLES
• Had been with Jesus for three years.
• Miracles of multiplication and nature
• Expected the same here?

• When you are “on mission,” you have peace. (John 18:4)
